| Comments: hello everybody i found this site a couple of weeks ago and its brought back a lot of great memories.ive seen alot of names i remember such as tom ewell adam brockie j greg travis joe posey rob bicknell bob thomas[my superviser in the mech shop}john noble ron jordan.i saw a picture of dave chism and mike ferrini.does anybody remember ignacio bill hill danny green or two other guys named turner and greer from the plane captain shop?there also was a ad1 wettenburger{i think thats how you spell his name}there too.that guy acted like a jerk toward some of us plane captains.i remember the smells and the sounds of the flight line and flight deck like it was yesterday.singapore and austraila on that 86 westpac where my favorite places to visit.i remember flying to the philipines for the first time to meet the squadron and seeing the carl vinson for the first time and thinking "is that thing going to float".i remember the a-7 from va-97 going over side of the ship because a final checker did not push the circuit breaker for the brakes in and the pilot could not stop the plane and he ejected as the nose of the plane was going over the side.i had such great and also some bad memories i think about that tme every day and wishing i didnt make the mistake of getting out when i did.i had three years shore duty coming up and i got stupid and got out. life hasent gone quite the way i had hoped but you have to live with your desecions. well i left my e-mail address if anyone is interested in contacting me .hope to hear from some of you. also im so loyal to the squadron that i even got personalized licence plate {it says navy veteran va-27}the only one in the state of michigan."royal mace forever"! |

I was a 2 tour Mace, first from 74-77 and made both cruises on the Big E, both of the cruises turned out to be best of my 24 years. The parties we had in P.I were the best. Second tour was from 89-92, cruised on the Chucky V, made the last A7 cruise with them and had the best mech shop ever, the highlight of that tour was making ADC. Retired in 1997 and now living in Fallon, NV. I currently work at the Topgun school as a Plane Captain and love my job. Thanks for memories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

After my TAD in the Lemoore gym/Enterprise laundry, I worked out of the AME shop for about a year. I then went to troubleshooters/final checkers, working out of the line shack. No job I've had since can match the excitement of working on the flight deck. The best part of those days was spending time with my squadron buddies. Comments: I am a Vietnam era Veteran and am looking for information and assistance.
First, What years were "ATKRON" used on the squadron patch instead of "Attack Squadron"?
Second, Does anyone on site have an ORIGINAL Vietnam era squadron patch they are willing to sell? I have a Vietnam era G1 flight jacket that I would like represent VA-27 on.
Any help is appreciated.

| Comments: Wow, the memories. Made me pull out the cruise books. Was with the squadron from 72-75. Two westpacs. I was AIMD, repairing ECM and RWR equipment. In 72/73 we were flying alpha strikes into North Vietnam, and in 74/75 we were flying strikes into (God knows where-secret). Anyway, the pilots were busy and the SAMs gave our equipment a workout. I remember that a couple of pilots were targeted by SAMs and when we pulled into port, smuggled a bottle of Jack Daniels aboard as a gesture of appreciation. Memories? Cdr. Bud Edney...best skipper I ever had. Captain C.C. Smith, skipper of the Big E - always jogged with everyone on the flight deck. Fallon memories: LtCmdr Gravely getting punched-out by some hippy dude at a bar in Fallon, NV. Also remember being at a bar in fallon (I think it was named 'Moms') and the senior officers were making the junior officers buy pitchers of beer. As I recall, a new ensign pee'd in a pitcher and all hell broke loose when the other officers found out what they were drinking. Also remember Lt. Parker taking a small group of us out to the bombing range on a day when the skipper (Cdr. Edney) and the CAG commander were doing practice. At the end of practice they buzzed the targeting towers. I remember the two planes coming at us eyeball level across the valley floor, pulling up just before hitting the tower. So close you could feel the hot jet exhaust. Memories while deployed: The smell of dirty laudry at the end of a 30 day line period (no one ever did laundry at sea...we stored it and had it washed when we pulled into subic.) The big fire on the forward hangar deck at the end of a work-up just before our 74/75 deployment. The EA-6B 'cold cat shot'...2 RIOs lost?. The midnight loss of Petty Officer Ritchie (?)... man overboard. Crossing the equator. The drug overdoses in the squadron after leaving Hong Kong. The theft of hundreds of sodas from the VA-27 Officer's coke mess. Wow. Memories I haven't thought about in years. I'm now a civilian living in Camarillo, CA. NAS Pt. Mugu is near by. And although I left VA-27 in 1975, I still visit friends regularly who live in Lemoore. Do you ever get the thrill of smelling jet fuel exhaust out of your system? |

Comments: I was an AZ-2 working under Chief Fred Harrel. Co-workers were Bob Carlblom & Vlasic. Was with the Maces aboard the Enterprise during my last cruise in 1974-1975, flew off in the COD a few days before the fall of S. Vietnam. I just found the VA-27 website and it sure brought back some memories. I remember getting to know a lot of the pilots, ie: Mike DiBello, since we handled all the gripe sheets (My favorite: "relief tube too short, checks out OK on enlisted men!").
The most memorable port was Mobassa, Kenya (Bob Carlblom & I took a few days leave and rode a bus to Melindi, met a couple of American schoolteachers & had an absolute blast). That was when the QE2 was also in port so we decided to get away from all the British tourists.
I'm a petroleum geologist now and the wife & I live in central Kansas.

I was pretty well known for doing stupid things One memorable one was calling cmdr Pappas George the first time i did a walk around with him. It all turned out ok because i stayed his plane capt. until he was shot down. Those years were relly tough but also wonderful and exciting. |
