Comments: I arrived at VFA-27 in October of 1992 and proceeded directly to my first cruise. I still remember arriving at the USS Kitty Hawk and smelling urine from 200 yards away, wondering what the hell I got myself into. The experienced guys I worked with really helped me to learn the particulars of nightly Release Checks. I was a Flight Deck Troubleshooter on my second cruise. This was my favorite job because our shop really worked well together and we cross-trained ourselves to make us more effective. I also really enjoyed working with the pilots, performing our Indy 500 pit crew tasks. The training with FLIR Pods has helped me get a really good job on the outside. I'll never forget my experiences, such as getting to take a flight in one of VFA-125's B models with Lt. Hilterman (QAO)to re-enlist in the air and riding in the Blue Angels' Fat Albert thanks to Tony Dicapo (my roomie for a while). I still keep in contact with Dan Peistrup as well. I feel a sense of pride being a part of such a good team and even though I was glad to get out of the Navy, I have great memories of my experiences.

Comments: Wow, I came across this site and felt at home, I'm a 2 tour Charger. First 73-77 as a Plane captain and ADJ Troubleshooter, of couse I can't forget the 3 months in the laundry my first cruise. Those four years were truly my best in the 24 years of active duty, we had such a bond that even those 8 month cruises seemed short. The officers and enlisted worked so well together and of couse partied real well together also. My second tour was 89-92, I tried to come back sooner with the help of CDR Mal Branch (CO) but my detailer said now way shipmate. I was an Instructor at Namtra at the time. I had my second best tour as the 110 WC Supervisor, my crew was the best A7E TF-41 mechs (And D704 Buddy store) anywhere bar none. Even those guys in VA-97 hated us because we were good. The highlight of my second tour was making ADC, what better command to make it in. Reviewing the decklog I came across so many names of the past its just awesome. During the second cruise the VA-27 power plant was the best.We were still working with the TF30-P6 but we made them hummm. Comments: Took the 'Shitty Kitty" around the horn. Electrical fire at least once a day(fire-fire-fire). Carl Vinson was better. Should have gotten an award for what must have been the longest plane captain training in naval history. Started with the A7. Bout had it figured out, then BAM... we transition to the 18's. Start all over. With the countless TAD's,think I was finally certified a few months before my time was up. Cant say all was fun,but sure met some great guys that worked really hard for 27. Proud to be a Charger...

Comments: I have been in touch with Heberling, but would like to hear from others. I was pretty young and immature looking back on my days in the Line Shack, I barely spent time in Airframes due to lack of proper attitude. I bucked the military as much as I could and made some lifers pretty miserable. It was the only place that would tolerate me and for that I am thankful. Some memorable moments 1) Line shack mutiny by heaving the brand new wash bottle over the side of the ship on night shift 2) Nose jack rebellion 3) Jacking up the vending machine for free geedunk 4) Getting an RE-1 (Honorable) re-enlistment code after telling the Airframes chief to "kiss my ass YOU take the nose jack" two weeks before my 4 year hitch was up. Dave Chism said it best. "Mike, you are an asshole."

Comments: I was one of the original 'Plankowners'. Started out in 1967 as a 'Boot' Chief working Night Check Maintenance and later on transferring to Power Plants CPO and Aircraft Division CPO, when I transferred in late 1971. Had some good memories of VA-27, the fine Crew and Officers all top notch. Remember the many challenges with the TF30-P-6 engine in the A7A and what a relief it was to get the TF41 in the A7E (Sure know the pilots appreciated 15,000# thrust!). I can still remember the fine Powerplants crew, who never ceased to amaze me - they never let me down and that was what made life on the carriers/deployments meaningful. Anyway, to make a long story short, I was transferred to the F14 program and to VF-124 at NAS Miramar, finally retiring in September of 1974. Worked as a Millwright in El Centro for two years and was hired on as a Pratt & Whitney Field Rep in March of 1977. After 23 years and many assignments (My first Pratt assignment was a rep for VF-114 and VF-213 on the Kitty Hawk), finally retired at 62 years and settled in North Texas. I still work on aircraft engines, only this time they are Packard-Merlin and RR Griffon engines. Some fun, working for a 40 year old, but he really knows the Merlin and Griffon engines. Some of you folks may have heard a P51 Mustang during a flyby at an airshow, and the Merlin really sings. The old engines definitely have a personality all their own! And the Reno Air Races are something else. All the best to VA and VFA-27. Many memories and I truly appreciate what you do - your sacrifices and accomplishments are really the best. Comments: Hi to all! I am a plankowner. I arrived at VA122 fresh out of jet school and was assigned to the prop shop, 'cause there were still A1E's and T-28's in the squadron and not enough jets! I was only there a few days before going into the jet shop. Good to see Mr Dreiling and Mr Powell aboard. I was really saddened to hear about Mr Karp passing away. I have a story about him that I'll pass on later. And who could forget Bergie! Checked the Dead Bear Locker lately, Bergie? Armie is here, too! I've kept in touch with "Pete" Peters and Dean Pruitt, and ran into Tom Ousley at a gun show in Dallas. More later. Any of you guys remember who it was that locked his knees and passed out at the commissioning ceremony?

Comments: i remember first getting to the pi and everyone was deployed doing what ended up to be the 102 days in the IO. when the ship finally got to subic everything went crazy. we had so many people in the squadron boarding the berthings were full and we the newbies had to berth with the black shoes behind the MAA shack towards the stearn. it was the first time on ship for me and the animosity towards the ships company and the airdales was enormious. every day we get off work and our racks was tore up and our personal gear was gone through and fighting over bullshit was a everday thing that was my first experience aboard the coral sea and will never forget. lastly i'd like to say greetings to all the shipmates i had a blast in charger country and still working in the milatary enviroment thanks to the ojt and training i recieved when i was active. god bless and good will "hooaha"

Comments: This cruise was quite interesting and I actually enjoyed it. For being the oldest carrier in the fleet we never went on water hours. Capt Stanley was one hell of a CO. The one disappointment of the cruise was that the Maces were to offload at Cubi while VA-97 was to go to the Indian Ocean with the ship. We actually unloaded the whole squadron and moved to Cubi Pt only to be ordered back onto the ship to go to the Indian Ocean with the ship. It was a long 102 days at sea, but it enabled a lot of us to save money and eventually come home with money that we probably would have spent otherwise. The hostage rescue attempt with the painting of wings of the aircraft and the anxiety of the possibility of actually being involved in hostile action was quite exciting, yet tramatic. I had to field a lot of questions from my juniors about what was going on and I was just as much in the dark as everyone else. I was frocked to E-8, AQCS, by Commander Partington on the forecastle and that also was a highlite of the 79-80 cruise. I really enjoyed reading and seeing the inputs to the Mace web site. I will visit regularly hoping to read or see things from shipmates that I served with. Everyone take care.

Comments: I remember when 27 first came to Japan. I was with VFA-192 at the time. They have definitely become one of the best HORNET Squadrons around. They said that they would change CAG-5, nobody believed them at the time. They did and it was for the better. Remember working the night of those DAMN TERRORIST ATTACKS. They made us go on a 10 day cruise on the Sh*tty Kitty!!! Glad I will never go on that ship again!!! I wish I could have stayed longer than 6 months but I would rather fly the HORNET than fix 'em. Left 27 for the Seaman-To-Admiral Program. Hope to fly the Super Hornet they are going to be getting in the future.

Comments: Reported for duty at Lemoore in late August of '67 while the squadron was just forming. George Pappas was CO, Donald Felt XO and Mason Gilfry was personnel officer. I remember walking into VA-122's office and asking where VA-27 was. Finally found it. My time was up in late August of '68 so didn't complete the cruise. That was my first sea duty, and it was an experience I'll never forget. Flew from Clark AFB back to San Diego and was discharged.

Comments: When I joined the squadron in 72, T.R. Williams was still in the squadron. The wings folded flight was in his log book. We had an excellent safety record, won the Safety Award just prior to the 72 cruise. But the CAG OPS officer flew our aircraft and had a ramp strike and ejected. That went on our squadron record. I remember when a pilot was selected to fly into Ubon, Thailand, he would take thousands of dollars with orders for gold jewelry from everyone in the squadron. Our officers mess would get bills from the Cubi O Club, Subic O Club, and the Chuckwagon for damages incurred during our last in port period. The aircraft had great bombing systems. 20' CEPs were common and bullseyes during Compex.

Comments: I was in the squadron from July 1994 until May 1997, I worked in the paint shop for the initial CAG paint scheme. I have 2 of the original models, purchased in Atsugi 2 weeks after we unveiled the plane, not for sale. I also have pics of myself and another guy named Moya painting the plane during each step of the process. Great site, about 1 million times better than the official website. Great pics too!

Comments: Plankowner; wasn't it fun writing all those new directives (Thank God for the Argonauts!). Remember, we were the ONLY Sqd to bring back all our drivers - each cruise (lost some A/C, tho). Pete Walden, landed aboard "Connie" with the big hole in the wing; Jim Lee - bad hit, but made it out to just offshore NVN & was recovered; Skipper Pappas, battle-damaged divert, crashlanded and ejected in Da Nang, darn near took out a Hanger; Rod Karp, shot down over Laos, picked up by the CIA helo (Air America) - he was so happy to see them that he gave them his pistol (got some grief for that!); Bud Biery, a SAM got him while trying to fire his Shrike at night, then his raft wouldn't inflate, but they got him back to the ship. He was the "spare," but I was boxed in by a down A/C, so they launched him. I went down to watch the movie, quite pleased with the turn of events, at least 'til the word came down about his shoot-down; had a whole different perspective on it then. We're still friends, tho. Great to see this site; looking forward to reading more. Anyone know whereabouts of Jim Tuck, The best darn AV. Bosun Mate in the business?

My dad flew for VA-27 when it was started... he was shot down over Laos on his second cruise and picked up soon thereafter. After the Navy and instructing, he became an FAA Air Traffic Controller in Auburn, Washington. He passed away in 1978 by taking his own life.

I WAS WORKING THE HANGAR DECK BACK ON THE CORAL SEA IN THOSE DAYS AND WE ALL HAD A VERY GOOD TIME EVEN THOUGH THOSE VIETCONGS KEPT US BUSY. THE CORAL SEA IS GONE NOW BUT HER MEMORY LIVES ON IN THOSE WHO SERVED ABOARD HER.I LOOK THROUGH MY CRUISE BOOKS TO EMEMBER ALL THE GUYS I USED TO KNOW IN THOSE DAYS AND STILL SOME COME TO MIND EVEN NOW BUT WE ALL CAME TOGETHER ON THE CORAL SEA.
