Pacific Ocean (May 27, 2006) - A flight deck Sailor makes preparations to launch an F/A-18E Super Hornet assigned to the Royal Maces of Strike Fighter Squadron Two Seven (VFA-27) off the flight deck of USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) during cyclic flight operations. Kitty Hawk typically conducts flight operations over a 12-hour period each day, including both day and night missions. Currently under way in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR), Kitty Hawk demonstrates power projection and sea control as the U.S. Navy's only permanently forward deployed aircraft carrier. Philippine Sea (July 16, 2006) - An F/A-18E Super Hornet attached to the "Royal Maces" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 27 assigned to Carrier Air Wing 5 of the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) carrier strike group makes an arrested landing on the flight deck of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65). Kitty Hawk and Enterprise conducted dual carrier air operations today to exercise interoperability and enhance combat readiness. The Norfolk based Enterprise carrier strike group is currently on a scheduled six-month deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Kitty Hawk has been under way since June 8, conducting exercises in its western Pacific Ocean area of operations, including Valiant Shield 2006, the largest joint U.S. military exercise in recent history.
